Britain will hold general elections today, which will shape the country after it (hopefully) leaves form the European Union on January 31st. The current PM, Boris Johnson, looks like he will gain a conservative majority in parliament by 28 seats. Yet, just two weeks ago, Johnson's party was looking to win 68 seats. Many election predictors are not ruling out a "hung" parliament (no political party has a majority) which would make Brexit incredibly difficult.
Mexico's 2006-2012 Public Security Secretary has been arrested for accepting millions of dollars in cash from drug cartels. Largely credited with beginning the infamous "War on Cartels" in Mexico, Genaro Garcia Luna was also convicted of lying by hiding his connection to the cartels in his application to become a US naturalized citizen. The allegation comes from a member of the Sinaloa Cartel that was brought in during the trial of El Chapo.
71 Soldiers from the Niger military were killed by militants with ties to ISIS and Al-Qaeda by the Niger-Mali border on Wednesday. This marks yet another violent encounter inspired by islamist extremists that has placed West Africa on high alert. At the same time, French military in the presence is angering the locals, since they see it as their former colonizer attempting to maintain their power in the region.
